GM September Sales Down 3.5%; GM CYTD Sales Up 1%
Seventh Consecutive Record Model Year for Trucks
DETROIT, Oct. 3 General Motors today announced
that its September vehicle sales decreased 3.5 percent to 416,070 units. Car
sales grew three percent to 221,596 units and truck sales were off 10 percent
to 194,474 units, reflecting the comparison to an extremely strong year-ago
September when 26 truck records were set. Several models posted a best ever
September including the Oldsmobile Alero, Pontiac Grand Am, Chevrolet Venture
and Tahoe and the Saab 9-5. In addition, the Pontiac Grand Prix had its best
September since 1978 and the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra posted near-
record September sales volumes.
2000 Model Year Performance
GM 2000 model year sales surpassed 1999 model year sales, marking the best
model year performance for GM since 1989. Not only was the 2000 model year
the second straight year that GM exceeded 5 million units, it was also the
seventh straight year that GM Trucks set a model year record. Car sales
decreased three percent and truck sales rose five percent. Model year records
were set by the all-new GMC Yukon as well as the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet
Tracker, Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Jimmy, Oldsmobile Bravada, GMC Sierra,
Chevrolet Silverado (best since 1978), Oldsmobile Alero, and Saab 9-5.
Calendar-year-to-date Performance
GM calendar-year-to-date vehicle sales rose one percent. Car sales dipped
one percent, while truck sales climbed three percent. Sales of vehicles in
key car and truck segments continued to be the driving force behind GM's
strength during the first nine months of this year, rising five percent.
Full-size utility sales rose six percent, midsize car sales grew five percent
and full-size pickup sales climbed two percent.
"Our September volume dipped a bit but our sales are still strong,
especially with the industry running as fast as it has been this year. Our
model-year performance reflects both the health of the industry and important
gains for GM in key areas of the market including large trucks and midsize
cars," said Bill Lovejoy, group vice president of North America Vehicle Sales,
Service and Marketing. "We have the right mix of products going into 2001 and
we expect to further strengthen our sales with the launches of the all-new
Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Oldsmobile Bravada, Chevrolet Avalanche, and
Buick Rendezvous."
