Volkswagen Sales Up 11 Percent - Best September Since 1973 - Best September for Jetta and PassatAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 3 Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported its best September sales in 27 years. In September, Volkswagen sold 30,819 new cars in the U.S., which represents an 11 percent increase over last year's mark of 27,753. For the year, Volkswagen is well ahead of last year's record pace. Year- to-date, Volkswagen has sold 274,885 new cars, up 14.8 percent from the same period in 1999 when sales were 239,382. Last month's results represented a record-breaking September for Volkswagen's most popular models, including the Jetta and Passat. The Passat enjoyed a record with September sales of 7,550, versus last year's mark of 5,351, an increase of 41.1 percent. Volkswagen's top-selling Jetta model had record-breaking September sales of 12,510 versus 1999's mark of 12,361, an increase of 1.2 percent. The Jetta continues to be America's best-selling European nameplate. Volkswagen's New Beetle sales of 6,483 in September were off 6.3 percent versus last year's September record of 6,919. For the year, the New Beetle is out performing 1999, with sales of 63,420, up 1.9 percent from last year's mark of 62,231.
