American Axle & Manufacturing's Information Technology Strategy Recognized By InformationWeek MagazineDETROIT, Oct. 2 American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (AAM), which is traded as AXL on the NYSE, was recently recognized by InformationWeek magazine as one of the 500 leading North American businesses in the use of information technology. AAM received three gold citations in the areas of technology strategy, e-business strategy, and business practices. Now in its 12th year, the InformationWeek 500 list is determined by an in- depth survey of companies. The survey identifies patterns of IT procedural, technological, and organizational innovation, with an emphasis on the quality of those innovations. AAM ranked in the top 100 overall and in the top five in the automotive sector, which included OEMs and tier-one suppliers. AAM's new business-to-business portal, introduced on August 2, 2000, demonstrates the type of innovative thinking that led to the company's recognition by InformationWeek. The portal features customized information and an interactive communications link for suppliers, including on-line tracking of quality performance using a new scorecard, and automated review of the suppliers' involvement in AAM's new suggestion program, Suppliers and Customers Aligned for Excellence (SCALE). The new portal also features a detailed product catalog for existing customers and potential customers, a comprehensive new investor site, an updated human resources link, and information on AAM industry events and community involvement. "We are extremely gratified to have received this recognition from InformationWeek," said AAM Chief Information Officer Abdallah F. Shanti. "Our strategy has been to leverage information technology effectively and economically, while creating new opportunities which will propel our company into the future. We have a cross-functional team in place which continues to analyze, implement and improve e-business initiatives in all areas of our business to maximize our competitiveness in the marketplace."
