AMA: Watson wraps up 540cc AMA Hillclimb Championship
29 September 2000
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- With two rounds left on the AMA U.S. Hillclimb Championship presented by Pace American Trailers, David Watson, of Ludlow, Mass., took the first step in becoming the first rider to win dual hillclimb championships in a single season by winning the 540cc class championship with a fourth-place finish at the Nashville, Ind., round Sept., 24. Watson missed the podium in the 540cc class only four times in 14 events to date, logging seven wins and never placing lower than eighth. In the 800cc class, Watson enjoys a 26-point lead and could lock up the title at the next round, set for Jefferson, Pa., Oct. 1. Making the 540cc championship even sweeter for Watson is the grand prize he'll pick up from series sponsor Pace American Trailers, the official trailer of AMA Pro Racing. Soon Watson will be towing a brand new semi-custom Cargo Sport trailer with an "SX" options package. The Cargo Sport SX is an 8-foot-by-16-foot, fully enclosed tandem-axle trailer featuring electric brakes, a heavy-duty rear ramp door, a 36-inch side door, two dome lights with a light switch near each door, two adjustable roof vents, chrome-center caps on the wheels and a 24-inch stone guard up front.
