Motorola AIEG Recognized for Outstanding Leadership in Environmental ManagementMotorola AIEG Earns the 1999 CEO Award for Staying at the Forefront Of International Environmental Standards NORTHBROOK, Ill., Sept. 28 In acknowledgement of its leadership in implementing pollution prevention and energy reduction programs, Motorola's Automotive and Industrial Electronics Group (AIEG), a business unit of the Motorola Integrated Electronic Systems Sector (IESS), today was presented the Motorola 1999 CEO award for becoming the first Motorola group to have all its manufacturing facilities registered to the international standard, ISO 14001 EMS. Robert Growney, chief operating officer and president, Motorola, Inc., was on hand to present the award. ISO 14001 is a global standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on responsible environmental management. The standard addresses such issues as management commitment to continuous improvement, integrating environmental considerations in operating procedures, training employees on their environmental obligations and conducting audits and management reviews of the environmental system. "This award exemplifies our dedication to supplier excellence. We're committed to the community, our customers and the environment," said Dave Melka, senior vice president and general manager for AIEG. "We set the goal to register all AIEG manufacturing sites to the international environmental standard at the end of 1995, before customers were encouraging registration. By November 1998, all five manufacturing sites were registered to ISO 14001." While compliance with ISO 14001 is voluntary, Motorola has demonstrated its ability and willingness to act in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. "Motorola takes its responsibility to the community and the environment seriously," said Joe Guglielmi, executive vice president and president of the Integrated Electronic Systems Sector. "Internally, we don't consider compliance with ISO 14001 optional." In 1999, all of the IESS global manufacturing sites achieved ISO 14000 certification and Motorola in its entirety was certified ISO 9000, the organization's standard for quality. Motorola AIEG manufacturing facilities are located in Northbrook, Ill; Elma, NY; Seguin, Texas; Angers, France; Stotfold, United Kingdom; and Tianjin, China.
