BREST, France--Sept. 27, 2000--Autocruise Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture between Lucas Industries Ltd. (a subsidiary of TRW Inc.) and Thomson-CSF, has been selected by MAN, a German manufacturer of high-technology trucks, to provide adaptive cruise control radar sensors for MAN's new "Trucknology" range of trucks.
The award follows a period of extensive evaluation testing by MAN in which the Autocruise(R) radar showed the highest performance, reliability and durability, even in the worst conditions. "Autocruise is the best radar on the market," said Dr. Karl Viktor Schaller, head of advanced engineering at MAN.
With this award, Autocruise Ltd. extends its customer portfolio from passenger car to truck applications. The company is starting production of its radar sensor at the end of the year to support the vehicle launch of a major European automaker. Autocruise Ltd. will produce sensors in volumes up to 240,000 units per year at its facility in Brest, France.
The company will develop a next-generation radar, and it recently concluded a strategic alliance with Visteon Corporation. The company also is deeply involved in the European program CARSENSE, a consortium of car manufacturers, suppliers and research institutes that is developing advanced driver assistance systems.
