Cummins' Patrick Flynn to Retire

    COLUMBUS, Ind.--Sept. 21, 2000--Cummins Inc. today announced that Patrick F. Flynn, Vice President - Research plans to retire from the company.
    "This year will mark my 30th anniversary at Cummins," said Flynn. "I have enjoyed working with the people of Cummins, particularly with our dedicated and professional technical organization, and most importantly, with our customers around the world. I wish them all continued success."
    "In his time at Cummins, Pat has lead the development of some of our most significant new platforms," said Tim Solso, Cummins Chairman and CEO. "The contributions he has made to our technical organization have been substantial, and we wish him nothing but the best in his well-deserved retirement."
    Flynn joined Cummins in 1970 as an Advance Development Leader, and five years later he was promoted to Director of Research and Engineering. In 1981, he was named Director of Engineering. Flynn was named Executive Engineer in 1985 and later in the same year he was promoted to Vice President -- Research.
    "Pat has always challenged us to base our engineering on fundamentals of science and technology," said John Wall, Vice President -- Chief Technical Officer. "He has led by example, and his research in the area of combustion and emissions has had a profound impact not only on Cummins, but on the entire industry. We value Pat's technical contributions and leadership, and wish him well in retirement."
    Flynn is affiliated with many national organizations, including the National Academy of Engineering of the United States of America and the National Research Council where he served as a member of the committee to perform technical assessment focused on logistics support requirements for future Army Combat Systems and the committee to review the Federal Transportation Science and Technology Strategy. Flynn is a Registered Professional Engineer with the State of Indiana and a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also an Industrial Fellow Commoner Churchill College, at Cambridge University in England.
    Flynn serves on the Board of the Army Science and Technology, National Research Council; and is a member of the Combustion Institute and the Advisory Board for the Combustion Research Facility of the Department of Energy, Sandia National Laboratories. He is also a member of the Executive Advisory Board for the Department of the Army's University Research Initiative and the Department of Energy, Office of Heavy Vehicle Technologies.
    During Flynn's career at Cummins, he received numerous honors - the Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota, Board of Regents; the Distinguished Service Citation from the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin; and the Engine Manufacturers Association's Outstanding Achievement Award.
    Flynn received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He received his MBA from Indiana University. Flynn also holds an MS in Agricultural Engineering and a BS in Agricultural Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Minnesota.
