BP Announces New $250,000 Beyond Performance Award New City YMCA LEED Council First Recipient

    CHICAGO--Sept. 15, 2000--

BP Donates A Total of $1 Mil to Chicago Non Profits

BP (formerly BP Amoco) today announced it has created a new award -- Beyond Performance -- recognizing organizations that have gone beyond the traditional methods of community service and economic development. The first recipient, New City YMCA LEED Council, will receive $250,000. The Award will be presented during the annual BP Leader Awards ceremony on September 15 at the Fairmont Hotel from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This award along with the $750,000 being presented to three Chicago non profits -- ACCION Chicago, Fund For Redevelopment and Revitalization, and Women's Business Development Center -- totals $1 million.
The BP Beyond Performance Award was created in the spirit of looking beyond traditional ways of doing business, and the constraints of charitable giving while moving toward the aspirational goal of social performance.
"As a community-based industrial and workforce development agency, LEED has gone beyond traditional performance and exceeded expectations for a not-for-profit organization. LEED has consistently brought creativity and strong leadership to its many collaborations, and has stimulated much additional investment in the community," said Paula Banks, Vice President of Global Social Investment.
Founded in 1982, the New City YMCA LEED Council led a movement to save local industries facing a potential loss of 40,000 jobs. By partnering with the City, businesses and the Chicago community, LEED spearheaded an industrial retention and job creation strategy which paved the way for $80 million in publicly funded projects, $150 million in private investments, and over $1.5 billion in job development contracts.
Today LEED continues to help build a better Chicago through Integrated Economic Development and Workforce Development. Its strength is creating effective public private and community-corporate partnerships that lead to sustainable job creation and retention, leadership and innovation.
BP is a leader in setting new standards of corporate social performance. Its Global Social Investment Unit enables communities where it operates to reach out and create better lives for themselves through the building of community-based wealth, the creation of jobs, resources invested and its products and services.
