CTS Corporation Chosen as Supplier for Lucent W7020 Bluetooth Radio Subsystem

ELKHART, Ind.--Sept. 13, 2000--CTS Corporation announced today that it has been selected by Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group, the world leader in communications semiconductors, to supply multi-layer, low temperature, co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates for Lucent's integrated Bluetooth radio subsystem.
Lucent expects to utilize CTS' LTCC technology to package its W7020 Bluetooth radio subsystem as a single integrated component, providing the miniaturization and reliability needed by manufacturers to support today's smaller, high performance mobile electronic products.
Bluetooth wireless technology is expected to revolutionize personal communications by allowing cellular phones, PCs, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other devices to share information without the need for hardwired connections. For example, users will be able to remotely access e-mail located on their notebook computers using their wireless cellular phones.
The W7020 is a complete, low-power Bluetooth radio subsystem in a single component. Lucent's pre-qualified Bluetooth solution, announced in November 1999, can minimize customer risk, speed time-to-market and support multiple intellectual property platforms.
The CTS multi-layer LTCC substrate combines next-generation, three-dimensional RF design with advanced packaging technology, allowing for the integration of RF functional blocks into tiny RF modules. This combination supports miniature, low-cost assemblies that can speed time-to-market. CTS' RF Integrated Modules business has supported Lucent from the design engineering phase of the program, and will provide manufacturing and technical support to Lucent from CTS' facilities in both West Lafayette, IN, and Singapore, Republic of Singapore.
A nine company Promoter group that includes Lucent Technologies, leads a Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) of over 1,800 members. CTS is a SIG member actively supporting Bluetooth module development. The Bluetooth Promoters and SIG members are combining their respective skills to bring Bluetooth enabled products to market.
The Bluetooth wireless technology is an open specification for communication of data and voice. The result of cooperation between leaders in the telecommunication and computer industries, the Bluetooth specification specifies a system solution comprising hardware, software and interoperability requirements. The Bluetooth radio operates in a globally available 2.4 GHz ISM band, offering a unique opportunity for communication compatibility worldwide. Further information on Bluetooth wireless technology, including the 1.0 specification, can be found on the official Bluetooth website at http://www.bluetooth.com.
