AVL's SPRYTE(TM) System to Assist Howard County, MD Snow Removal Fleet

13 September 2000

AVL's SPRYTE(TM) System to Assist Howard County, MD Snow Removal Fleet
SARNIA, Ontario, Sept. 13 AVL Information Systems, Inc.
(CDN: AVLL) is pleased to announce that they have received an order from the
Howard County (Maryland) Bureau of Highways for 60 SPRYTE(TM) units. The
SPRYTE(TM) in-vehicle unit combines both GPS and "event-based" wireless
technologies to offer a turnkey fleet management system. The County
anticipates that the use of the SPRYTE(TM) will increase the effectiveness and
efficiency of their snow removal fleet.
Howard County will use the SPRYTE(TM) applications to identify areas of
heavy network traffic and determine if the current infrastructure can
adequately carry the traffic flow on Bureau of Highways' snow removal
networks. Using the SPRYTE(TM), which offers exacting location through GPS
(Global Positioning Systems), the County will be able to monitor status of the
plow blade as well as the salt spreader on all vehicles.
Howard Shieh, Project Manager of the Bureau of Highways, stated, "We chose
the SPRYTE(TM) system because it provides us with real-time proactive
in-vehicle monitoring and reporting of key events related to our snow removal
operations." Mr. Shieh later added, "We hope to create a historical database
providing information on the area our fleet covers, and which areas of the
county are being neglected. By using this information, we will be able to
provide much better coverage during storms and in turn, save lives."
