United Auto Workers and General Motors Corporation Sponsor Make-A-Wish(R) Day; Transform Comerica Park Into a Field of DreamsDETROIT, Sept. 13 Comerica Park will be transformed into a "Field of Dreams" by Make-A-Wish Foundation(R) children, as part of the United Auto Workers (UAW, International Union) and General Motors Corporation (UAW-GM)-sponsored Make-A-Wish Day, commemorating the Foundation's 20th birthday, Saturday, Sept. 16. "We are thrilled with UAW-GM's support of our 20th birthday and are excited about celebrating this milestone with them in communities across the country, said Paula Van Ness, president and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. "Our UAW-GM commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation is consistent with our common goals to improve the quality of life in communities across the country," said UAW Vice President Richard Shoemaker and GM Group Vice President - Labor Relations, Gary L. Cowger. Let the Festivities Begin ... The festivities begin with the "Wish Team" children on the sidelines for Tigers' batting practice at 11:00 a.m.; to be followed by a pre-game media reception at the Tiger Club, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Baseball memorabilia will be given to 14 Wish children and photographs taken of the "Wish Team" children with Tiger team member representatives and UAW-GM leaders. The celebration continues on the field prior to the Detroit Tigers double-header against the Boston Red Sox, which starts at 1:25 p.m. As part of the pre-game ceremony, the Make-A-Wish kids -- clad in Tigers jerseys -- will take the field. The children, collectively known as the "Wish Team," will join the Tigers starting lineup. Local Michigan Wish child, Dylan, 8, will toss out the ceremonial first pitch. On display in the pavilion will be the restored '89 Camaro of Wish child Josh, 18, also from Michigan. The car was recently restored by UAW-represented GM employees from Local #160 and GM-salaried employees located at the GM Tech Center.
