Popular Mechanics Magazine and Wal-Mart to Donate Tools to Local High Schools; Schools to Make and Donate Toys for Children in Need This Holiday Season
NEW YORK--Sept. 12, 2000--Popular Mechanics magazine and Wal-Mart are joining forces to launch the "Tools for Schools" program in the fall of 2000. Eight Wal-Mart stores in Oklahoma will donate an assortment of Popular Mechanics brand tools to local junior and high school shop classes. In exchange, the classes will build toys with their Popular Mechanics tools and donate the toys to local charities.In mid-December, the participating schools will present their toys to the charities at special events held at Wal-Mart stores in Tahlequah, Sallisaw, Wagoner, Muskogee, McAlester, Ada, Stigler and Checotah. The participating schools are: Tahlequah Junior High, Tahlequah, Okla.; Sallisaw High School, Sallisaw, Okla.; Wagoner Middle School, Wagoner, Okla.; Warner High School, Warner, Okla.; Parker Mid High School, McAlester, Okla.; Pontotoc Technology Center, Ada, Okla.; Kiamichi Technology Center, Stigler, Okla.; and Eufaula Junior High School, Eufaula, Okla.
"The `Tools for Schools' program is a great way to help young people develop their skills, while giving them the opportunity to assist needy children in their communities," said Gordon Erickson, senior vice president/general merchandise manager for Wal-Mart.
"We are very excited that Popular Mechanics is a part of such a worthwhile venture," said Joe Oldham, editor-in-chief of Popular Mechanics. "We look forward to working with these students and providing project ideas and instruction on how to make great toys."
