(IHS Group) is a leading provider of engineering, energy and regulatory information databases published in a variety of media, from CD-ROM to the Internet and intranet. Its individual operating companies all serve the vital information needs of customers across a variety of technical, business and professional markets. (PRNewsFoto)[KC] ENGELWOOD, CO USA 08/31/1999IHS Converts Millions of Engine-related Paper Documents To CD-ROM Format to Organize and Create Easy Access for Titan Program DENVER, Sept. 11 IHS Enterprise Solutions, an IHS Group company, recently won a data conversion contract estimated to eventually total $1.4 million with Aerojet. IHS will scan and capture approximately one and a half million documents and produce a CD-ROM for each set of engine documents for each vehicle. This enables the various user groups such as design, quality and manufacturing engineers, as well as internal auditors for logistics and product integrity to search, retrieve and view these documents with relative ease. IHS anticipates converting documents for 120 Titan engines over the next several months. By creating a searchable database, this conversion to CD-ROM format will facilitate an improved and more efficient review for ourselves and our customers," said Brad Bates, Aerojet Titan production program manager. "In addition, time required to research hardware processing problems and problem resolutions will be accelerated by use of the computer. Previous searches were performed manually, so theoretically, this project could eliminate the need for our customers to travel here and spend weeks reviewing paper." Aerojet has been a major sub-contractor to the Titan project as a builder of turbo pump-fed liquid propellant engines for approximately 20 years. Each vehicle includes two stages that are built and tested in accordance with strict design specifications via a thorough records-keeping process that tracks the dispensation of materials or procedures on the engines. This produces a vast amount of documentation that represents both conformance verification data and historical data for the engines of the Titan project. "After Aerojet reviewed the volume of vital paper documents concerning everything from the production and maintenance to testing and auditing of the Titan engines, they sought an electronic data management solution to increase efficiency," said Dennis Zehnle, president, IHS Enterprise Solutions. "At Aerojet's request, we evaluated the data management processes and are now delivering a custom database solution that will dramatically increase efficiency and eliminate many paper management headaches."
