Mazda Expands Deployment of SDRC Products

    CINCINNATI--Sept. 11, 2000--SDRC

Mazda to increase Metaphase(R) deployment by 63% and
to double I-DEAS(R) implementation in support of
the Mazda Digital Innovation (MDI) technical system

SDRC , a global supplier of e-business collaboration solutions for the product lifecycle, today announced expanded deployment of its I-DEAS(R) and Metaphase(R) software products within Mazda Motor Corporation in support of the Mazda Digital Innovation (MDI) system, Phase 3. Initiated in 1996, the MDI technology system has been implemented within Mazda to improve quality and efficiency of vehicle development and manufacturing.
Mazda is expanding its use of SDRC Metaphase product knowledge management software to 2,400 licenses, representing a 63% increase in Metaphase deployment, and they are more than doubling their SDRC I-DEAS mechanical design automation software implementation to include approximately 1,500 licenses.
"Mazda considers MDI a core competency for our product development. We will continue to strengthen MDI to increase our competitive strength," said Phil Martens, managing director in charge of Product Planning, Design and Programs for Mazda, in a press release issued by Mazda on September 5, 2000. The release also indicated that, "Mazda expects to reduce the number of prototype cars by 30% and testing time by 50%...and to reduce vehicle development time after styling freeze from 18 months to 14 months for brand-new models."
In Phase 3 of MDI, Mazda has specified two major objectives to support their business goals for MDI which include:

-- Reduce vehicle development time while improving vehicle performance and durability; and,
-- Improve the availability for collaborative environments within its vehicle development initiatives.

"As major manufacturers worldwide continue to face competitive challenges, initiatives such as Mazda's MDI system will be critical in achieving their overall business goals," said Bill Weyand, chairman and CEO, SDRC. "SDRC's products continue to gain momentum within the automotive industry, in particular, and we're pleased that Mazda is expanding its MDI system to further enhance its product development processes."
