Modine Introduces Deeper, Cooler, Charge-air Coolers At SAE Off-Highway Expo in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE--Sept. 11, 2000--Off-highway equipment makers who need to meet the Tier 2 emissions regulations that take effect on Jan. 1, 2003, could benefit from the use of two new charge-air coolers made by Modine Manufacturing Company . Charge-air coolers reduce emissions by cooling the air from the turbocharger that enters the engine during the combustion process.
"Deeper charge-air cooler cores can get the charge-air even colder, which results in more complete combustion and even fewer emissions" explained Bob Meyer, principal engineer, Modine Heavy Duty and Industrial Division.
Modine is offering two new sizes of charge-air coolers that have deeper, or thicker, cores: one is 4-1/4" deep and the other is 5-1/2" deep. Modine already offers charge-air coolers with 2-5/8" and 3-1/4" deep cores. The new, deeper cores are ideal for use on engines in the medium- to high-horsepower ranges, above 100 horsepower.
Equipment makers can tailor the Modine charge-air coolers to the application by specifying the type and spacing of the cooling air fins. Modine's patented V-wave and square-wave fin surfaces, which are clog-resistant, or high-performance, louvered, fins can be specified, along with the number of fins per inch. In addition, the tubes of the charge-air cooler can be ordered with or without turbulators. Turbulators can provide additional cooling power, but can increase charge-air pressure drop.
"The advent of deeper charge-air coolers on the market is being driven by another trend in engine-cooling technology -- the use of engine-cooling modules with the heat exchangers mounted side-by-side rather than front-to-back," Meyer explained.
Air can flow faster and more easily through the side-by-side style module than the front-to-back style, contributing to increased cooling performance. And, the side-by-side configuration is easier to service. The two air-conditioning unit with deeper cores will be on display at Modine's Booth #801 at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Off-Highway & Powerplant Exposition at the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee, Sept. 11-13, 2000.
