Intermec Named GM 1724 Certifying Agent; Intermec Program Helps GM Suppliers Meet New Shipping Label Standard Requirements

    EVERETT, Wash.--Sept. 11, 2000--

Intermec, Booth No. 648 AUTO-TECH 2000 September 12-14

Intermec Technologies Corp. has been named by General Motors to assist suppliers to meet GM's new shipping label requirements for parts and components entering its supplier pipeline.
The new label standard requires GM suppliers to use a specific shipping label format when shipping to GM. The format specifies two types of bar codes -- a 2D PDF417 bar code and a traditional 1D bar code -- and additional tracking data. More than 30,000 GM suppliers are affected by the standard.
The requirement, known as the GM1724 Shipping Label Template, is designed to increase efficiency and accuracy by providing more information about parts as they move into and through GM's assembly operation. Bar code printers currently in use in the industry to print the labels may need to be upgraded to handle the new format. Others may need to be replaced with printers able to handle the new requirements.
GM has named Intermec an official compliance-certifying agent.
"Intermec, as one of the auto industry's largest suppliers of bar code printers, and GM are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible for GM suppliers," said Bill Hoffman, Solutions Manager -- Industrial, who leads Intermec's GM1724 compliance strike force. "Many of these suppliers are Intermec's valued customers. By acting directly on GM's behalf to officially certify compliance, our customers are assured we have the knowledge and commitment to accompany them through the compliance process."
As a designated GM1724 compliance certification agent, Intermec has established a two-step process to ensure successful certification. Information about the process is available at www.GM1724.intermec.com. To register for the service, visit the website or call 800/815-3363.
