ANC Named South Carolina Employer of the Year; Work With Blind is Win-Win for All

    FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--Sept. 6, 2000--The South Carolina Commission for the Blind recently named ANC Rental Corporation South Carolina's Employer of the Year. The award was presented in recognition of ANC's efforts to provide meaningful, state of the art employment to the visually impaired.
    ANC employs seven visually impaired Reservations Sales Associates at its Goose Creek, South Carolina call center. Two of the individuals are totally blind and the others have varying degrees of blindness. The criteria for being selected Employer of the Year include providing training designed to support the special needs of the blind, providing jobs that encourage financial independence and placing visually impaired individuals in positions that promote positive self esteem.
    "We are pleased to be able to provide meaningful employment for visually impaired associates," said Karen Beard, ANC's president, North America for Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental. "We pride ourselves on the diversity of our workforce. The award validates the fact that we are doing the right thing by identifying opportunities and adapting our work environment to make the most of the skills and abilities these associates contribute to our organization."
    "It's the right thing to do," said Bob Detrano, Senior Director, Central Operations. "Our visually impaired associates are very dependable, above average performers. Technology has come a long way to support the visually impaired in becoming more proficient on computer systems. It's gratifying that we can work together to create a win-win situation."
    Detrano said that ANC is working with the Commission for the Blind to further expand the program. The Goose Creek ANC call center employs over 800 people. Other ANC call centers are located in Salt Lake City, Utah; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Boca Raton, Florida.
