John Deere Selects Stanadyne's Fuel Manager For New 'Full Authority' POWERTECH Engines

HARTFORD, Conn.--Sept. 5, 2000--John Deere has selected the Stanadyne Fuel Manager(R) diesel fuel filtration system with an integrated electronic fuel pump for its new "full authority electronic injection" POWERTECH 4.5L and 6.8L engines, said Simon Garner, director of sales and marketing for Stanadyne Automotive Corp.'s Power Products Division.
The new POWERTECH 4.5L and 6.8L, for the first time, employ sophisticated electronics to provide precise control of engine timing, fuel delivery and other operating conditions, according to Wayne Mills, fuel system engineer for Deere Power Systems Group. A key feature of this full-authority engine is its "non-traditional use of pulse width modulation (PWM)" technology to operate the Stanadyne Fuel Manager's electronic fuel pump.
The computer-driven PWM feature controls Fuel Manager's pump to precisely govern fuel pressure to the fuel injection system, providing optimum fuel pressure regardless of operating demand. "Working in concert with a fuel pressure sensor that's located on the Fuel Manager's lift pump housing, PWM allows us, for example, to command low pressure during start-up/cranking and to provide very precise higher pressures during operation," explained Mills. "The result is a more responsive, better performing engine with significantly reduced emissions."
Among the Fuel Manager's other features are the ability to purge air and prime the fuel system. A related benefit--constant air bleed--makes the "priming feature work extremely well" by accelerating the air purging process, Mills said. Additionally, the Fuel Manager system, together with corresponding engine electronics, will alert the operator when the filter element needs changing and provide continual diagnostics to ensure the system is operating properly.
The new POWERTECH 4.5L and 6.8L are extensions of the POWERTECH line of engines John Deere introduced in 1995 to meet the U.S. Federal Tier I emissions standard for off-road vehicles and equipment. The new engine is debuting on John Deere's Mannheim 6000, a line of premium small row-crop tractors now in production for the European market.
Stanadyne adapted its Fuel Manger 100 system to meet John Deere's specific needs for the "full authority electronic injection" POWERTECH 4.5L and 6.8L engines, said Vince Attianese, senior applications engineer at Stanadyne. The Fuel Manager is an innovative diesel fuel filtration system that employs interchangeable modular components--state-of-the-art filter elements, water separators, fuel heaters, lift pumps, see-through bowls and other options--designed for quick, easy, tool-free installation and service.
Stanadyne Automotive Corp. is a leading manufacturer of diesel fuel injection and filtration systems for the automotive, construction, industrial and agricultural vehicle and equipment markets, and supplies gasoline engine components to major automakers. The company, which has a worldwide network of some 1,200 sales and service agencies, is the only leading manufacturer of diesel fuel pumps and injectors to market its own diesel fuel conditioners.
John Deere is the world's leading producer of agricultural equipment; a leading manufacturer of construction, forestry, commercial and consumer equipment; and is a business leader in parts, engines, credit, special technology and managed health care.
