CASCAR: Kennington wins Final Qualifiers' race at Delaware
3 September 2000
LONDON, ON - DJ Kennington of St. Thomas, ON raced to victory in the Final Qualifiers' race to claim the 27th starting position for Sunday afternoon's CARQUEST 300 at Delaware Speedway Park. The former Delaware track champ started ninth in the 12-car field but didn't waste any time in heading to the front of the pack in the 25 lap sprint. Kennington's Castrol Dodge suffered engine trouble in Friday evening's qualifying heat race and was forced to participate in the Final Qualifiers' race on Saturday night. But everything was working well on this night and the young star was able to cut his way through traffic in short order and moved to the front on lap 12. From there, he stretched out his lead to over two seconds at the finish. Former CASCAR Rookie of the Year Derrick Tiemersma, of Newmarket, ON was second on Saturday evening and will start just behind Kennington. The remainder of Sunday's 39-car starting field was established based on time trial results and provisional starting positions. The CARQUEST 300 will start Sunday at 2:15 p.m. by Inside Track Communications.
