GM August Sales Down 5%; CYTD Sales Up 1.3%
DETROIT, Sept. 1 General Motors today announced
that its August vehicle sales decreased by five percent to 435,597 units. GM
car and truck sales also declined five percent to 237,055 units and 198,542
units, respectively. The expected results come as the industry continues to
moderate from the record year-ago sales level.
While GM's sales rate has abated somewhat in recent months, GM's calendar-
year-to-date vehicle sales rose 1.3 percent to 3,470,961 units. Car sales
were off two percent for the CYTD, but GM's truck sales climbed 5 percent to
1,683,605 units -- an all-time record pace for GM Trucks.
"We never find a comfort level when sales are down, but it's important to
keep in perspective that as the calendar year progresses, industry moderation
is expected," said Bill Lovejoy, GM group vice president of North America
Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "The sales environment is still very
encouraging and we are committed to maintaining our market momentum,
particularly with our core products."
GM's August truck performance was strong considering the year-ago
comparison. For instance, it was the second-best August for GM Trucks. In
addition, the Chevrolet Tahoe set an August record, while the GMC Yukon, Yukon
XL, and Chevrolet Suburban had their second-best August ever to last year's
record. For the second straight year, the Chevrolet Silverado posted its best
August in 20 years.
The 13 percent decrease in GM full-size utility sales reflects the
availability constraints that still exist for these high-demand, industry-
leading trucks. CYTD-August GM full-size utility sales were up 9 percent,
reflecting the gains GM has made in the segment all year.
August and CYTD sales moved at a brisk clip in GM's core segments with
several key brands posting strong results for the month -- Chevrolet Impala,
Pontiac Grand Prix and Bonneville, and the Chevrolet Silverado. CYTD-August
GM core segment vehicle sales rose 7 percent.
