Subaru of America, Inc. Reports Strong August Sales

               Brand Posts Best Legacy Sales Month in History,
                       Best Forester August Sales Ever

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., Sept. 1 Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced sales figures for the month of August.  Subaru recorded a
sales total of 16,013 units for the month, an increase of 4 percent from the
same period last year.  Year-to-date totals of 114,405 units are up 13 percent
from August 1999 year-to-date totals of 100,826 units.
    The Legacy model line achieved its best sales month in history with
9,026 units posted, up 6 percent from August 1999 Legacy sales of 8,504 units.
Outback accounted for 6,310 units for the month.  Forester posted strong sales
of 5,137 units, an increase of 15 percent from the same period in 1999 and the
best August sales since the model's introduction in CY1997.  Impreza accounted
for 1,850 units for the month of August.
