DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group Announces Best-Ever August Sales And Shatters All-Time SUV Sales Record
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 1 Booming sport utility vehicle
sales and record Dodge Division and Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep(R) Division
sales drove DaimlerChrysler Corporation's Chrysler Group to the strongest
August sales in the corporation's history.
The Chrysler Group set 19 sales records by selling 216,869 vehicles in
August, up two percent over August of 1999. SUV sales of 77,467 rose
18 percent over 1999 sales and surpassed the previous best month sales record
of 69,892 set in May 2000.
"The positive buzz about our new products hitting showrooms, especially
the new minivans, has translated into increased traffic and sales," said
Theodor Cunningham, Executive Vice President Global Sales and Marketing. "We
have always believed, and still believe, that when the consumer shops our
product, they buy our product."
Minivan sales skyrocketed in August with the Chrysler Town & Country up
95 percent and the Dodge Caravan up 57 percent from the same month last year.
Chrysler Voyager shot up 37 percent over last month, making August a new
all-time sales record since the launch of the new nameplate.
In August, the Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep Division sold a record 98,119
vehicles. The Chrysler Brand sold 45,661 vehicles breaking the previous
August record of 34,228 set in 1985, making this the eighth consecutive sales
record for the brand.
The Dodge brand sold a record 118,750 vehicles, surpassing 1999's record
110,692. Best-ever August minivan sales of 49,124 surpassed the previous
record of 45,508 set in August 1997 and are up 48 percent over August 1999.
The Dodge Dakota enjoyed its best ever August sales -- up 68 percent, while
Dodge Durango sales increased 27 percent and Dodge Truck sales jumped 12
percent setting a new sales record.
August Sales Highlights:
* Best-ever month SUV sales of 77,467 pass the previous record of 69,892
set in May 2000.
* Best-ever August minivan sales of 49,124 surpass previous record of
45,508 set in August 1997.
* Dodge Caravan up 57 percent and Chrysler Town & Country sales up 95
percent.
* Chrysler PT Cruiser sales of 13,221 up 14 percent versus July.
* Total truck sales up 16 percent compared with August 1999.
* Jeep Cherokee sales up 12 percent with 13,486 units sold.
* Record Dodge Truck sales of 96,268 up 12 percent over record 1999 sales
of 82,469.
* Dodge Durango sales of 17,044 up 27 percent surpassing previous record
of 12,972.
* Dodge Dakota best-ever August sales of 14,682 up 68 percent making
August the third consecutive monthly record and seventh sales record in the
last nine months.
