Mitsubishi Motors' Best-Ever August Sales

          Continued Success of SUVs and All-New Eclipse Spyder Drive
                             Summer Sales Figures

    CYPRESS, Calif., Sept. 1 Mitsubishi Motor Sales of
America, Inc. (MMSA) today reported best-ever August sales of 27,540 vehicles,
up 6.2% over August 1999.  Strong sales continue to be driven by the all-new
2001 Montero luxury SUV and the Montero Sport mid-size SUV.  The all-new
Eclipse Spyder also saw its best August ever, with 1,513 vehicles, up 163.1%
from August last year.  August 2000 represents the 14th consecutive
record-setting month for Mitsubishi Motors.
    Calendar-year-to-date sales for 2000 are at 214,109 vehicles, 34.3% over
the same period in 1999.  This sales rate exceeds Mitsubishi Motors' own
projections and reinforces the sales goal of 300,000 vehicles in calendar year
2000.
    "We are enjoying record sales thanks to a strong economy and high consumer
confidence which is driving strong showroom traffic," said Pierre Gagnon, MMSA
executive vice president and chief operating officer.

    Product sales numbers of note:

    -- Best-ever August sales, with 27,540 vehicles sold, up 6.2% over August
       1999.
    -- Best-ever August Eclipse Spyder sales, with 1,513 vehicles sold, up
       163.1% over August 1999.
    -- Best-ever August Montero sales, with 1,900 vehicles sold, up 287% over
       August 1999.
    -- Best-ever August Montero Sport sales, with 5,784 vehicles sold, up
       13.5% over August 1999.
    -- Best-ever August Galant sales, with 7,977 vehicles sold, up 1% over
       August 1999.
