Volkswagen Sales Up 5.8 Percent - Best Month in the U.S. Since 1974 - Best Jetta Month in History; Record August for PassatAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 1 With its August sales, Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported its best sales month in 26 years. In August, Volkswagen sold a record 34,276 new cars in the U.S., representing a 5.8 percent increase over last year's 32,389. Not since 1974 has Volkswagen enjoyed a sales month of this magnitude. For the year, Volkswagen continues on a record-setting pace with year-to- date sales of 244,066, up 15.3 percent from the same period in 1999 when sales were 211,629. August represented another record-breaking milestone for Volkswagen's best-selling Jetta model, which enjoyed sales of 14,974 versus 1999's mark of 14,121, an increase of 6.0 percent. This represents the best month in the model's 20-year sales history. Volkswagen's award-winning Passat sedan and wagon recorded its best August ever with sales of 7,546, an increase of 15.6 percent over last year's 6,527. Volkswagen's popular New Beetle recorded sales of 7,474, down 6.7 percent from last year's all-time record-setting New Beetle month of 8,013. For the year, the New Beetle is on a record-setting pace with sales of 56,937, up 2.9 percent over 1999's 55,312.
