Hayes Lemmerz Berea, Kentucky Operations ISO 14001 Registered

30 August 2000

Hayes Lemmerz Berea, Kentucky Operations ISO 14001 Registered
NORTHVILLE, Mich., Aug. 30 Hayes Lemmerz International,
Inc. today announced that its operations in Berea, Kentucky has
received ISO 14001 registration. It is the fifth Hayes Lemmerz facility to
receive such registration.
ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is a worldwide
federation of more than 130 nation members that promotes the development of
voluntary international standards. The 14000 series of standards covers the
environmental field, specifically environmental management systems (EMS).
ISO 14001 registration indicates that environmental compliance, pollution
prevention and continuous improvement are integrated into the manufacturing
facility's overall management system.
"The ISO 14001 standards demand a corporate-wide commitment to
environmental performance, and that's what we've encouraged and supported in
achieving this registration. We have good people, solid systems, and are able
to meet world class standards for operation," said Michael McGrath, President
of Hayes Lemmerz Commercial Highway and Aftermarket Division. "That's good
for us, our customers and the community, because it shows how we're committed
to long-term business planning."
"The dedicated employees at our Berea Operations have always been
committed to the integrity of the environment; and ISO 14001 registration
represents an important endorsement of the already high standards under which
they've always operated," said Michael Coffman, Hayes Lemmerz' Director of
Health, Safety, Environmental and Risk Management.
Achieving registration involved a multi-phase process of internal and
external review. Hayes Lemmerz' Berea Operations initially conducted an
internal gap analysis to see how existing processes stacked up against the
standard's 17 required elements. After the processes were refined, the system
was assessed by AQSR International, an accredited registrar. AQSR
International certified Berea's environmental management system as meeting the
ISO 14001 standard. In order to maintain registration, the Berea Operations
must demonstrate during periodic audits that it continues to meet the
standard.
