Exide Announces Plans for NASCAR 2001 SeasonREADING, Pa., Aug. 28 Exide Corporation , the global leader in stored energy solutions, today announced plans to refocus its participation in motorsports programs, while continuing its affiliation with NASCAR. The company, which has been a primary sponsor for Roush Racing's #99 Winston Cup entry for the past five years, will continue as an associate sponsor, at least through the 2001 racing season. "We value our relationship with NASCAR and the NASCAR brand as a premium product," said David Enstone, Exide Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Service. "Our NASCAR Select line of premium batteries has performed very well for Exide and our customers. "We will continue our NASCAR relationship, but we plan to focus our marketing and sales efforts to clearly differentiate Exide in the marketplace and further leverage the benefits of our acquisition of GNB Technologies." Consistent with this new marketing direction, Exide will end its primary sponsorship of Roush Racing, including the #99 Jeff Burton NASCAR Winston Cup car and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pickup. "Following a detailed evaluation of all marketing activities, including motorsports sponsorships, we have reallocated resources and dramatically reduced spending in line with strategic goals," stated Enstone. "Exide has enjoyed a tremendous relationship the past five years with the Roush Racing Team and is proud to have the Exide name associated with Jeff Burton's ascent into the top echelon of Winston Cup drivers." According to Geoff Smith, President, Roush Racing, "Exide has been a terrific partner in our NASCAR efforts. We are sorry they had to make this move, but we are very pleased they will retain an associate sponsorship position." "I really appreciate Exide's support during the past five years," added Burton. "I have enjoyed the relationship and hope our success has been beneficial for the company. They have been a great sponsor and made it possible for me to join Roush Racing." Exide Corporation, following its planned acquisition of GNB Technologies, will have annual revenues of approximately $3.2 billion and operations in 23 countries, and be the world's leading manufacturer of electrical energy storage solutions for transportation and industrial applications.
