Gibbons and Dowler win CASCAR Sprint races at Mosport
27 August 2000
OSHAWA, ON - The remainder of the starting grid for Sunday's 'UAP/NAPA Presents the Mosport 250km' CASCAR Castrol Super Series National event was determined via a pair of timed Sprint races on Saturday afternoon at Mosport Int'l Raceway. Defending race winner and National champion Peter Gibbons added to his points lead by winning the first Sprint race, finishing just ahead of his nearest points rival, Don Thomson Jr. Robin Buck was third in the initial heat, which was 17 laps in duration. Heading into Sunday's 250 km race at Mosport, Gibbons - whose CASCAR team is based out of nearby Stouffville, ON - leads the unofficial National point standings by just 12 markers over Thomson (1147 to 1135). The second heat was reduced to 15 laps by a rain shower that started on lap 10. Prior to the rain, polesitter Al Turner was leading but was passed by Kevin Dowler, who took the caution flag at the end of lap 11 and led the rest of the way, trailing the pace car, until the checkered flag was displayed four laps later. Three-time National champion Dave Whitlock was third. Dowler currently sits third in the National standings with 1120. The Sherwood Park, AB racer is the top western-based competitor in the CASCAR standings and has the best shot to become the first non-Eastern driver to win the series' top honour. Weekend Schedule: Sunday will be busy at Mosport Int'l Raceway, with several races - starting at 9:00 a.m. - on the schedule, leading up to the 'UAP/NAPA Presents the Mosport 250km', which will start at 2:00. by Inside Track Communications.
