AMA: 2000 US ISDE World Trophy and Junior team announced
26 August 2000
2000 U.S. ISDE World Trophy & Junior team named PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has named the entire American contingent that will compete in the 75th running of the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE), to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 5 in Granada, Spain. This year's six-member World Trophy team is almost identical to last year's team that finished sixth in Coimbra, Portugal. The team includes Destry Abbott, of Peoria, Ariz., aboard his Kawasaki; Patrick and Brian Garrahan of Boulder Creek, Colo., aboard KTMs; six-time enduro champ Randy Hawkins of Travelers Rest, S.C., riding his Yamaha four-stroker; Fred Hoess, of Stanhope, N.J., aboard a Husqvarna; and Russell Pearson, of Las Vegas, Nev., riding a Yamaha. "Given that we've got all but one of last year's team members returning, we're confident we can improve upon last year's sixth-place finish." said Hugh Fleming, director of AMA sports. Last year's Trophy Team battled extremely dry, dusty conditions that caused the engine to seize on Abbott's Kawasaki on Day Four of the competition. In addition to the six-man Trophy Team, the AMA has also named its four-member Junior Trophy team, which is limited to riders 23 years old and younger. This year's team is made up of newcomers John Beal of Snohomish, Wash., Kurt Caselli of Palmdale, Calif., Cody Mastin of Whitehouse, Ohio, and David Pearson of Panaca, Nev. Another 30 riders have been assigned to three-member club teams. Last year the Salt Fork Dirt Riders club team -- the event's only over-40 team -- finished an impressive fourth out of 53 international club teams. While only a handful of America's top off-road competitors will qualify to compete in the 75th ISDE, interested spectators can also become a part of the ISDE experience -- and tour Spain -- with a tour put together by AMA Travel. The Team USA ISDE Tour runs Oct. 24 through Nov. 7 and includes round-trip airfare from New York's JFK Airport to Malaga, Spain; first-class accommodations for 13 nights; daily buffet breakfast; economy car with unlimited mileage; a special recognition dinner and gathering; an official Team USA jacket and two matching Team USA t-shirts. The price is $2,223 per person, double occupancy.
