Collins & Aikman Facilities Achieve Safety Milestones

    TROY, Mich.--Aug. 23, 2000--Collins & Aikman Corporation today announced that several of its North American facilities have achieved safety milestones of more than one million production hours without a lost work case. The facilities produce a wide variety of products, including accessory floormats, carpet and acoustics, and fabrics for Collins & Aikman's customers. In recognizing safety performance, each Collins & Aikman facility that attains a million-hour objective is presented with the Company's Chairman Award for Safety and Health.
    Commenting on the Company's achievements, Chairman and CEO Thomas E. Evans noted, "Achieving a million hour milestone without incurring a lost work injury takes a considerable amount of time and effort. In fact, many of our plants have gone several years without a single case. This performance is a clear testament to the outstanding employees that comprise Collins & Aikman's workforce."
    Listed below are the North American facilities that have achieved safety milestones for the period ending June 30, 2000.

    Canton, Ohio more than three million hours

    Holmesville, Ohio more than three million hours

    Zanesville, Ohio more than one million hours

    Albemarle, N.C. more than six million hours

    Old Fort, N.C.

    -Manufacturing Facility more than two million hours

    -Engineering Design Center more than three million hours

    Farmville, N.C. more than three million hours

    Roxboro - Sycamore, N.C. more than two million hours

    In 1999, Collins & Aikman had 18 manufacturing facilities reporting zero lost work cases. These plants, which are located in the U.S., Mexico, Austria and England, have been recognized with a Corporate Safety & Achievement Award. To date, Collins & Aikman has 25 locations (or 40 percent of total) which have maintained zero lost work cases. Represented among them are facilities in the Company's North American Carpet and Acoustics, Accessory Floormats, Dura Convertible Systems, Plastics, and European Automotive Interior Systems manufacturing operations.
    Additionally, the Company's Accessory Floormats group has received the Leon Frederick Excellence in Safety and Health Award -- the second consecutive year that the team has been recognized for their overall safety performance.
    In commenting on the Company's overall efforts in health and safety Evans stated, "Our top priority is the health and safety of all Collins & Aikman's 16,000 associates. To achieve this excellent safety record is testimony that our associates and management fully support and understand the importance of safety in the workplace.
