CART: Tony Kanaan Qualifying Notes and Quotes, Elkhart Lake
20 August 2000
Tony Kanaan Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard clocked their fastest lap of the weekend thus far but moved up only one spot in the order and final qualifying today for Sundays Motorola 220. Kanaan toured the 4-mile Road America circuit in 1 minute, 41.816 seconds (an average of 143.129 mph) to take the 17th spot on the starting grid. Dario Franchitti will start from the pole after setting a new track record today with a time of 1:39.866 (145.924 mph). Race time is 1 p.m. CDT Sunday with a two-hour tape-delayed broadcast set for ABC-TV beginning at 4 p.m. EDT. TONY KANAAN I know deep down inside that I have a good race car, but things just keep happening that prevent us from stringing together a nice, uninterrupted run on the racetrack. Weve had our share of red flags. We ran out of fuel in the morning practice session. This track is so full of compromises that its tough enough to get the setup just right when everything is going smoothly. But its the same for everybody out there, and we just have to rise above it. Tomorrow, we will have to be smart and stay out of trouble. There are plenty of opportunities to move up here. I hope I can take advantage of them all!
