AMA: Carr shoots for an even dozen at Peoria

9 August 2000

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- As the AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track

Championships roar into Peoria, Illinois August 13, the same old question

remains. Can anyone beat Chris Carr at the Peoria TT?

Carr, of Fleetwood, Penn., has amassed a streak of wins that is nothing

short of legendary, taking the No.1 spot 11 times in the past 13 years

including an unprecedented 8-year streak from 1988-1995. In fact, Carr has never

finished outside of second place at Peoria since his first win in 1986. In 1987,

Bubba Shobert took wins at both Peoria rounds, with Carr taking second twice

that year. In 1996 and 1997, road-racing duties kept the TT specialist from

competing.

Joe Kopp is the only active rider to have logged a Peoria win during Carr's

reign and is thought by most to have the best shot at knocking Carr off of his

TT throne. Carr needs the win if he hopes put some distance between himself and

series second place rider, Will Davis. Davis, of Goldsboro, NC, is just

8-points off the lead with 102. Coming up fast behind Davis is Mike Hacker, of

Prince George, Virginia. Hacker won his first Grand National main event this

season and that win vaulted him into series third-place, just 13-points behind

Davis.

TTs or Tourist Trophy events, combine the power of 600cc singles with a

motocross-type track for an afternoon of racing action that is unparalleled on

the Flat Track circuit. With jumps, right-hand and left-hand turns the rider's

abilities are truly taken to the limit.

While at the Peoria TT, be sure to stop by the Progressive Insurance tent

for rider autograph sessions, video games, free magnetic schedules, posters and

other giveaway items. Once there you can Support the Sport by calling

1-800-FLAT-TRACK on the hotline or by receiving an on-line quote on the

Progressive computer. Don't forget, for every quote made through
