Participation grows in only international forum dedicated to entire integrated powertrain systemDETROIT - More than 1,100 attendees from 16 countries, representing 14 leading automotive companies and the automotive supply base, attended this year's Global Powertrain Congress June 6-8 in Detroit. Conference participants attended four concurrent technical sessions on the latest in engineering, materials and manufacturing technologies and had an opportunity to visit more than 50 exhibitors displaying innovative technology. "This GPC marks another year of increased growth in registrant and exhibitor participation," said Dr. Nasim Uddin, president, The International Council for Powertrain Engineering & Management. "The fourth annual GPC in 2001 looks to be more interesting then the previous three and will continue to be a 'must' for those powertrain industry leaders", said Uddin. Dr. Joachim Kupe of Delphi Automotive received the Powertrain Excellence Award for his research titled, "Non-thermal Plasma Exhaust After-treatment System for Diesel and Direct Injection Gasoline Engines." Kupe's research indicates that successful implementation of exhaust after-treatment technology will reduce NOx emissions by more than 70 percent and will reduce particulate emissions by more than 30 percent in diesel engines. Prior to awarding Dr. Kupe with this honor, Dr. David Roessler, senior staff scientist with General Motors Corporation validated the need for his research. "The diesel engine technology is advancing such that worldwide acceptance as a means to improve fuel efficiency is recognized. The elimination of harmful environmental emissions will speed up diesel implementation." Markus Beer of SPX/IBS Filtran received the second place Powertrain Excellence Award for his research titled, "All Plastic Oil Pan Filtration System." This new plastic oil pan filtration system addresses needs of manufacturers with a modularized system, replacing six separate components. The GPC 2001 will take place at Detroit's COBO Conference/Exhibition Center June 5-7. Conference organizers are now accepting technical paper abstracts through September 15, 2000. Please submit a 700-word abstract for one of the following technical sessions: * Advanced Engine Design & Performance * Advanced Transmission/Drive Line Systems Design & Performance * Fuel Economy & After-treatment Development * Advanced Propulsion & Emission Technology * New Materials & Development Processes * Powertrain Assembly, Manufacturing Processes and Systems
