GM July Sales Off Slightly from Year-ago Record Volumes

DETROIT - General Motors today announced that it sold 397,187 vehicles in
July, a 2.6 percent decrease from July 1999 -- the strongest July ever for the
industry. GM vehicle sales in the calendar year through July period rose nearly
two percent.
July car sales were comparable to year ago levels at 211,134 units and
truck sales were off five percent to 186,053 units. GM truck sales in July
1999 reached an all-time high as GM set 19 records for the month. This CYTD-
July truck sales are up six percent setting a new all-time record for GM
trucks during the period.
"There's nothing surprising about the moderating sales pace in the
industry, especially given the record sales levels we've seen in the past
several months," said Bill Lovejoy, group vice president of North America
Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "The exceptional sales volumes in the
second-half of 1999 will be a tough act to follow, but we will continue to
focus on our core segment strengths."
GM Core Segment Performance Remains Brisk
July and CYTD sales moved at a healthy clip in GM's core segments --
midsize cars, medium- and large utilities, and large pickups. Core segments
account for 60 percent of GM sales. GM's overall performance in core segments
during the CYTD-July period increased eight percent.
GM continued its leading position in the midsize car segment -- the
industry's largest segment -- with sales up seven percent in July and eight
percent CYTD. Strong midsize performers in July were Chevrolet Impala, up
82 percent; Oldsmobile Alero, up 18 percent; Pontiac Grand Prix, up
20 percent; and Pontiac Bonneville, up 128 percent.
GM utility sales declined nine percent in July but continue on a strong
CYTD track with sales up 14 percent for the first seven months of the year.
Medium utility sales rose 16 percent in July and 15 percent CYTD. GM's
inventory-constrained large utilities posted a 27 percent decline from a
record July 1999 but increased 11 percent CYTD.
Large pickup sales increased four percent in July and five percent CYTD.
