Volkswagen's July Sales Best Since 1980

Records Set for Passat and JettaAUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported its best July sales in two decades. In July, Volkswagen sold 30,139 new cars in the U.S., which represents a 4.8 percent increase over last year's mark of 28,745. Not since 1980 has Volkswagen enjoyed July sales of this magnitude. So far in 2000, Volkswagen is enjoying a record-setting pace. The German automaker has sold 209,790 new cars this year in the U.S., up 17 percent from the same period in 1999 when sales were 179,240. July represented another record sales month for Volkswagen's award-winning Passat sedan and wagon. The Passat enjoyed an all-time July record with sales of 6,784, versus 1999's mark of 6,446, an increase of 5.2 percent. Jetta also set a July record with sales of 13,032, an 8.3 percent increase over 1999's 12,034. Volkswagen remains America's top-selling European brand.
