Tracks: Big win for Irwin in ARANY Pro Stock Tour race at Lebanon Valley
29 July 2000
WEST LEBANON, NY- The full-fendered cars took center stage Thursday night at Lebanon Valley Speedway. The main event was a 25-lap ARANY Pro Stock Super DIRT Series feature. Lebanon Valley regular Butch Irwin was able to hold off all the DIRT big guns and the Valley locals to take the victory. DICKS AUTOMOTIVE and SPEEDS GARAGE sponsored the night's racing action. In other racing action Thursday night, Lloyd Fosby was the victor in the Pure Stock A-main. Claverack native, Ron Jacobsen, was the winner of the Pure Stock B-main. Wally Engel, from Ghent, was the winner of the Pure Stock C-main. There was a special Pure Stock feature run for outside invaders and Fonda Speedway regular Dave Bayes was the winner. The top eight finishers in the three Lebanon Valley Pure Stock races took part in a special 15-lap feature. The B-main winner, Engel led the first half of the race. Ryan Crellin made the pass for the lead at the halfway point and cruised home to victory. Brian Keough took top honors for the second time this season in the Rookie feature. The winner of the first cannonball run was Ken Van Alpen and the winner of the second cannonball feature was Al Relyea. The winner of the Team Cannonball feature was Team "A". Craig Simmons led the first three laps of the IMCA modified feature. He lost the lead to Steve Hough on lap four and Hough cruised home to victory. A full field of thirty cars took the green flag in the 25-lap Pro Stock main event. Trouble early for Rob Yetman as he almost spun in turn one on the start. Yetman was able to hang on but fell to the rear and eventually dropped from the event. The brother's Duzlak, Bobby and Ricky, both had difficult nights and would both retire from the event on lap two as the caution flew for a spin by Paul Rogers. Henry Tanner was in command of this event right from the start and was opened up a large lead. Trouble on lap four as Bubba Tanner, Adam Haas, Paul LaRochelle and Tom Kuck got together on the backstretch. The caution came out just a couple laps later as Todd Goldstein spun around in turn one and collected Ted Teal and Robbie Speed. The only car not able to continue was Speed. The yellow came out again a couple laps later for Earl Mellan as he broke while running in the top ten. Tom Faxon was making his first appearance of the year in the Pro Stocks and ran in or near the top five the whole race. The top five at the halfway point was Henry Tanner, Danny Sanchez, Butch Irwin, Scoot Govertsen and Pete DeFiglio Bubba Tanner was making a charge back to the front after his early race problems and was running eighth by lap 15. Some great three and four wide racing for tenth on back made for some very tense moments. While under the caution flag on lap 17 the complexion of the race changed dramatically as the second place car of Sanchez went pitside with a right rear flat tire. Then tragedy for the leader Henry Tanner as something let go on his car and he went pitside giving the lead to Butch Irwin. Govertsen and Jim Lagenback were sitting right behind Irwin in second and third. Goldstein spun for the second time on lap 19 and this time DeFiglio and Sanchez were involved in the incident. One more caution on lap 21 set up a four-lap shootout to determine the winner. Govertsen threw everything he had at Irwin but could not make the pass stick. The two came together on the last lap in turn four and Govertsen went hard into the frontstretch wall. Irwin was able to hang on for the biggest win of his career; Lagenback, Faxon and Bubba Tanner followed him across the line. Current ARANY Pro Stock series point leader, Jipp Ortiz, rounded out the top five.
