William M. Wicker and James R. Metzger of Texaco Inc. Join ECD Board of DirectorsTROY, Mich. - Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. announced today that William M. Wicker, Senior Vice President of Texaco, and James R. Metzger, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Texaco, have been elected to ECD's Board of Directors. Stanford R. Ovshinsky, President and CEO, and Robert C. Stempel, Chairman, in a joint statement, said, "We are very pleased that Bill Wicker and Jim Metzger have joined ECD's Board. Their extensive business acumen and expertise in the energy arena will be of great value to the company and its shareholders. We look forward to their contributions." They added, "With its Ovonic Solid State Hydrogen Storage System(TM) and Ovonic Regenerative Fuel Cell technology, ECD will play an important role in the burgeoning hydrogen economy. Our strategic partner, Texaco, is a leader in the global energy market. Together, we are working to make hydrogen power a practical alternative to fossil fuels." Mr. Wicker, 50, was elected Senior Vice President upon joining Texaco in 1997. He was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1971 from Union College and a Master of Arts degree in political science from Indiana University in 1973. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University Business School in 1975, at which time he joined Moore McCormack Resources Inc. He was appointed Vice President of Moore McCormack Energy in 1981. He served as a consultant with McKinsey & Co.'s energy practice in Dallas, Texas, from 1983 to 1987, and served as a Senior Vice President with Kidder Peabody from 1987-1989. Mr. Wicker joined First Boston Corp. in 1989 and was elected a Managing Director in 1993. Mr. Wicker's responsibilities at Texaco include Texaco Power and Gasification, Texaco Natural Gas, Texaco Pipeline International and Texaco Energy Systems. He serves on Texaco's Executive Council, the company's senior leadership team. Mr. Metzger, 52, joined Texaco as a programmer trainee in the Information Technology Department upon graduation from Rice University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He subsequently held various positions of increasing responsibility. He was appointed General Manager of Corporate Planning and Economics in 1994 and a Vice President in 1996. In 1999, he was named Texaco's Chief Technology Officer. He serves on Texaco's Executive Council. ECD also announced that two of its Board members, Nathan J. Robfogel and Joichi Ito, had stepped down due to additional business commitments. Messrs. Ovshinsky and Stempel, commenting on Messrs. Robfogel's and Ito's service to the company, said, "We sincerely thank Nick Robfogel and Joi Ito for the significant contributions they have made to ECD's success. Their guidance has been invaluable to our company. We appreciate their ongoing support." Mr. Ovshinsky added, "In particular, we want to extend our deep appreciation to Nick Robfogel for his long and distinguished service to ECD." ECD is a leader in the synthesis of new materials and the development of advanced production technology and innovative products. It has pioneered and developed enabling technologies leading to new products and production processes based on amorphous, disordered and related materials, with an emphasis on advanced information technologies and alternative energy, including photovoltaics, hydride batteries and hydride storage materials capable of storing hydrogen in the solid state for use as a feed stock for fuel cells or internal combustion engines or as an enhancement or replacement for any type of hydrocarbon fuel.
