TRACKS: Tremont, Smith and Lagenback all victorious at Lebanon Valley

24 July 2000

WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont visited victory lane for the fifth time this
season Saturday night at Lebanon Valley. Hawley Smith took the win in the
20-lap sportsman feature. Jim Lagenback was victorious in the 20-lap street
stock main. Longtime Lebanon Valley sponsor, Rifenburg Construction, brought
the night to us. Joe Fachini was the winner of the IMCA modified feature.

Steve Devine was the early race leader in the 30-lap modified feature
followed closely by Jason Goff. Kenny Tremont took advantage of his third row
starting spot and sat fourth by lap three. The leaders had to deal with
lapped traffic as early as lap seven. The first caution of the race came out
on lap eight when John Lutes spun out. Trouble in the middle of the pack
caused a huge pileup on the restart. Dickie Larkin, Russ Blair and Ronnie
Johnson were out of contention for the night. Tremont vaulted into the lead
on the next restart. The caution came out again on lap nine as Chip Mitchell
spun around in turn three.

Donnie Corellis was looking to make his sponsor proud on their night and
moved from fourth to second on the restart. Rich Ricci was the point leader
going into the feature. He was making steady progress through the field and
sat seventh by lap 13. Dave Leckonby took fourth away from Devine on lap 14.
The caution came out for Devine on the next lap as he spun in turn one. Ricci
was almost involved in the spin but did a great job of keeping the car headed
in the right direction. Leckonby moved into the third position on lap 16.
Ricci continued his forward progress and took over fourth on lap 18. Leckonby
and Ricci were putting on a good show for the third spot on lap 21. Dwyer
cracked the top five for the first time on lap 23 when he scooted passed
David Sanchez.

Ricci moved into the third position on lap 25, but he was a full
straightaway behind the top two. Near disaster for the leader on lap 28 when
Lutes spun right in front of Tremont. The ensuing caution allowed the rest of
the field to close in on the front runners. Tremont took off on the restart
as Ricci tried to apply pressure on Corellis. Corellis was strong to the
challenge and held on to second. Ricci was third, Leckonby was fourth and
Dwyer rounded out the top five. Tremont's victory allowed him to retake the
point lead from Ricci by one slim point

Trouble early on in the sportsman feature as several cars came together
on lap one. Art Collins was one of the cars involved in the incident, but he
was able to continue. When the green dropped again Charlie Humes was leading
the pack. It was a battle between father and son on lap one as Danny Watson
raced with his son, Jeff Watson. Hawley Smith got around Ed Harkin for the
runner-up spot on lap two. Danny Watson took over third on lap four as the
battle for the lead began to get interesting. Smith made the pass for the
lead on lap six. The second caution of the race came on lap eight when
Harkins spun around and collected K.C. Goewey, John Hotchkiss and Phil
Arnold. Mike Visconti had the second position briefly on the restart only to
lose it to Watson a lap later.

The point leader going into the feature was George Marcus. His night
ended prematurely when his left rear tire came off on the frontstretch on lap
eleven. The rest of the field did a fantastic job of avoiding the disabled
racecar. Sparky Lowe used the restart to get around Hume for the fourth spot.
Collins was quickly making his way back through the pack after his early race
headaches. He sat in the seventh position on lap 13. There was some great
side by side racing for the third spot between Lowe and Mike Visconti. The
two raced door handle to door handle for two laps with Visconti holding a
slight advantage. Watson did a slide job on Smith and took the lead on lap 18
just before the final caution flag flew for a five-car pileup in the back of
the pack. Watson was able to hold Smith off on the restart and had the lead
as they took the white flag. Watson slowed suddenly on the backstretch and
Smith was able to get around. Watson got going again and tried to reel Smith
back in but it was too little too late as Smith crossed the finish line
first. Watson was second, Visconti third, Lowe fourth and Bobby Knipe rounded
out the top five.

Twenty-five cars took the green flag for the 20-lap street stock feature
event. There was even more incentive to win tonight as Larry Filkins from
Capital Speed put up five hundred dollars to win the feature. Jim Lagenback
took command of the race at the drop of the green with Rob Yetman in tow. The
Duzlak brothers were right in tow as the top four quickly motored away from
the rest of the pack. Meanwhile there was a torrid battle for the tenth spot
between Butch Irwin, Adam Haas, Todd Goldstein and Scott Govertsen. Steve
Brownell spun on lap eight but was able to continue without bringing out the
caution.

Slower traffic came into play by lap eleven and Ricky Duzlak was able to
get around his brother for third. Lagenback and Yetman pulled out a half
straightaway advantage over third by lap 13. The first caution flag came out
when Kirk Stanaway tagged the turn four wall on lap 13. Another caution
slowed the pace the very next lap. Bobby Duzlak got loose coming off turn two
and that allowed Danny Sanchez to sneak around for fourth. Duzlak's night did
not get any better as he got spun around in turn four on the same lap. A
multi-car incident in turn four brought out the caution again on lap 18. One
of the cars involved was the current point leader, Todd Goldstein.

The restart was not very pretty as several cars got together on the
backstretch before the green flag ever flew. Goldstein was again caught up in
the melee. The remainder of the race was rather uneventful as Lagenback
cruised home for his first victory of the season. Yetman hung on for second
with Sanchez third, Ricky Duzlak fourth and Earl Mellan rounded out the top
five.

Automotive and Speeds Garage bring us the first cannonball run event of the
season. The DIRT Pro Stock Series will be on hand as well as Pure Stocks,
