Roadway Express Selected One of Best Places to Work

AKRON, Ohio - Roadway Express, Inc. is listed on Computerworld's 7th Annual 100 Best Places to Work in IT (information technology) for 2000.

Computerworld conducted a 46-question, on-line IT survey of CIO's, vice presidents and IT directors at U.S.-based companies with revenues of $500 million or more in 1999 and a minimum IT staff of 15 employees. Key questions were asked about each organization's benefits, training and development, percentage of staff promoted and turnover rates. Information was also collected on each organization's priority projects, mentoring programs and a variety of benefits, ranging from elder care and childcare to flextime and stock options.

According to Computerworld, the top companies selected share key elements for recruiting and retaining good, qualified employees. These top IT employers treat workers with respect; listen to ideas; are flexible and stay current in their fields; give workers access to interesting work and technologies; provide them with training and education to stay current in the field; allow workers to take charge of their own careers; and make the office a fun place to work.

"Roadway's senior management team fully and enthusiastically recognizes IT as vital to everything we do," said Vice President of Human Resources for Roadway, Tom Lopienski. "Everything from strategic initiatives to daily processes rely heavily on the expertise, dedication and creativity of our IT employees."

In November 1999, Roadway reinforced its commitment to maintaining a competitive advantage for its employees, its operations and its customers by realigning its IT organization. Spearheading this initiative was Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Bob Obee. The rest of the new senior IT management team consists of three directors, one each for IT applications development, IT infrastructure management and eCommerce technologies.

The reorganization helped position Roadway for continued leadership in the "new economy." "Already we have seen great results from a great team," said Obee. "Our Web site was recently recognized in the top 10 among transportation companies and the best among national network LTL carriers."

"I am very proud of our IT department's accomplishments. We've been through quite a bit together and have remained one of the best IT organizations. This award is a direct reflection on the quality of people that Roadway employs," Obee concluded.

Included on the Dow Jones Transportation Average, Roadway Express, Inc. is a leading transporter of industrial goods with a variety of innovative services designed to meet customer needs.
