Nissan Selects MTS as Strategic PartnerEDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Nissan Technical Center, Atsugi, Japan, announced today it has named MTS Systems Corporation as Nissan's partner in its new initiative for long-range strategic testing innovation. Simultaneously Nissan placed a $2.3 million order with MTS for advanced software and hardware for evaluating car designs. Key elements of this order include recently developed six-degree-of-freedom road simulation systems, new wheel force transducers and the latest generation of road simulation software. "For many years, MTS has been a supplier to Nissan of equipment that enhanced road simulation capabilities. We are delighted to continue this relationship in an even stronger role by providing not only the latest state-of-the-art simulation capabilities, but also by helping Nissan re-engineer their product evaluation activities," said Sidney W. Emery, Jr., MTS Chairman and CEO. "This selection further validates MTS' growth strategy of providing a full range of hardware, software and advanced technical services to assist customers in accelerating designs to market." The six-degree-of-freedom road simulators are particularly well suited for fatigue and durability testing of vehicle suspensions and full vehicles. This is a major advance in design that adds camber and steer to the traditional vertical, lateral, and longitudinal translation and brake rotation. The result is improved fatigue and durability analysis and prediction in both real and virtual prototype development. The patented spinning wheel integrated force transducer (SWIFT) measurement systems acquire road and testing data from all six components of motion at the vehicle spindle, both in the laboratory and on the test track. They save weeks of instrumentation time, through ease of installation. New RPC Pro software adds intelligent diagnostics and automatic data management to what already is the most widely used software product in vehicle testing and development. This newest version creates a more user-friendly, open, and customizable environment, critical features that accelerate the design evaluation process and free up engineers for improved productivity. MTS Systems Corporation manufactures computer-based testing and simulation systems for determining the mechanical behavior of materials, products, and structures, and measurement and control instrumentation products for the automation and manufacturing processes. The corporation had 2,400 employees worldwide and revenues of $390 million in the fiscal year engineering September 1999.
