Mazda North American Operations President and CEO, Richard N. Beattie, Elected to Ford Motor Company Post

    HIROSHIMA, Japan - Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that Richard N. 
Beattie, president and CEO of the company's U.S. and Canadian sales, marketing, 
service and parts distributor, will leave Mazda North American Operations 
September 1, 2000, to become Ford Motor Company's Vice President -- Investor 
Relations.  His successor was not named and will the subject of a separate 
announcement.

    Beattie, who is a Ford executive, took the reins of Mazda North American
Operations in early 1997 and through a series of reorganization and
consolidation moves has guided the company and its dealer network to
profitability and increased sales in the U.S. and Canada.

    "Richard's promotion and return to Ford Motor Company certainly affirms
the dynamic, creative and resourceful leadership he has brought to MNAO during
his tenure," said Mark Fields, president of Mazda Motor Corporation.  "He
leaves a very solid company with a strong executive management team and a very
bright future."

    Beattie began his career at Ford in 1973 as a trainee in the Finance
Department.  He proceeded through a series of Finance positions of increasing
responsibility.

    In 1990, he was named Marketing Plans Manager at Ford Division in Detroit.
Three years later, he became Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Jaguar
Cars in Mahwah, N.J., after which he returned to Ford in Detroit as Executive
Director of Rental, Lease and Remarketing Operations.  Before his position at
Mazda, he had been Executive Director of Americas and Worldwide Export
Operations for Ford Motor Company.

    Beattie received his bachelor's degree in Business Studies at Coventry
University in Coventry, England.
