Goodyear Announces Management, Organizational ChangesAKRON, Ohio - The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company announced today that in the wake of key executive retirements in its North American Tire group, it is taking the opportunity to make major managerial and organizational changes designed to strengthen top-line growth and performance. William J. Sharp, president of North American Tire, has elected to retire after 36 years of service with the company. "Bill has had an outstanding career in which he has made major contributions to the enterprise on an international scale," said Samir G. Gibara, Goodyear chairman, CEO and president. "The highlights of Bill's career include the start-up of our flagship tire plant in Lawton, Okla.; a strong performance as president of Goodyear Europe; and successfully beginning the turnaround in North American Tire." John C. Polhemus, currently president of Goodyear's Latin America Region, has been named president of North American Tire, succeeding Sharp. Chris W. Clark, currently managing director of Goodyear Brazil, has been named president of the Latin America Region, succeeding Polhemus. Additional management changes include the following: Marco V. Molinari, currently vice president of sales and marketing, North American Tire, has been appointed to the new position of vice president, global marketing projects. Jim M. Vogel, presently director, corporate accounts, North American Tire, has been named vice president of marketing and corporate accounts for North American Tire, reporting to Polhemus. Eduardo Fortunato, currently director of sales and marketing, Latin America Region, has been named managing director, Goodyear Brazil, succeeding Clark. All of the new managerial appointments are effective immediately. Polhemus, 56, began his career with Goodyear in 1969 as an international sales trainee in Akron. He held sales management positions in Denmark, Finland, Greece and Hong Kong before being named assistant to the managing director for Goodyear Argentina in 1980. He later held managing director positions in the Philippines, Malaysia, Turkey and Brazil before returning to Akron in 1995 as vice president, Latin America Region. He was elected president, Latin America Region, in 1999. Clark, 48, joined Goodyear in 1973 as a management trainee in Akron. After holding finance management positions in Akron and Chile, he moved to Goodyear Argentina as assistant to the finance director in 1980. Clark subsequently held finance director positions in Guatemala, Indonesia, Australia, Venezuela and Brazil. In 1993, he was appointed director of finance, Latin America Region. Clark later served as managing director of Goodyear Indonesia and, since 1998, managing director of Goodyear Brazil. Sharp, 58, had been president of North American Tire since July 1999. Previously, he was president of global support operations for three years and president of Goodyear Europe for four years. His career also included positions as executive vice president of product supply; vice president of tire manufacturing; director, tire manufacturing, Europe; and director, domestic tire manufacturing. Sharp served as plant manager of tire facilities in Lawton, Okla.; Amiens, France; and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. Goodyear is the world's largest tire company. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, the company manufactures tires, engineered rubber products and chemicals in more than 90 facilities in 27 countries.
