Family Road Safety Event Set at Hallett

8 July 2000

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Phillips Petroleum Company and KOTV-Channel 6 (Tulsa) have teamed up for a "Road Wise: Getting Smart About Highway Safety" fair at Hallett Racing Motor Circuit on Saturday, July 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Phillips 66 NASCAR Busch Series driver Todd Bodine will host the event.

"Aggressive driving and road rage are serious problems on America's roads," says Bodine. "We hope to increase driver safety awareness and at the same time have a fun-filled day at the track." Gate proceeds will benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

Celebrity drivers have been recruited to drive "legends" cars around the 1.8-mile, 10-turn course. Legends cars are a 5/8 scale of American two-door sedans or coupes built between 1928 and 1948, and are powered by 1200 cc, four-cylinder engines that deliver 122 horsepower.

"We're having great success in getting race car drivers and celebrities to participate," says Bodine, who is currently second in points in the NASCAR Busch Series. At press time, confirmed participants are Sprint Car driver Aaron Berryhill and SCCA Trans-Am driver Leighton Reese, as well as country music stars Mel Tillis and Moe Bandy and film star Gary Busey.

In addition to legends racing, the fair will include activities such as motorcycle races and demonstrations by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, car club displays of vintage and high performance cars, and hands-on activities like the seat-belt Convincer Machine, the Rollover Simulator and the blind-spot No Zone tractor trailer.

Tickets are $5 per person and will go on sale June 10 at participating Phillips 66 stores and local AAA of Oklahoma offices. Hallett Motor Racing Circuit is located west of Tulsa at the intersection of Highway 412 and Highway 99.
