Cummins Engine Company, Inc. Ranked Among the Best Places for Minorities

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Cummins Engine Company, Inc. has been ranked number 47 on "Fortune" magazine's list of the 50 best companies for minorities.

"We are pleased and proud to be recognized by "Fortune" magazine as one of the 50 best companies in the United States for minority employees," said Tim Solso, Cummins' Chairman and CEO. "We believe that our success as a company comes from embracing diversity and creating a work environment that encourages everyone to contribute to their full potential. Only those companies that are diverse, and that manage diversity well, will be competitive in the 21st Century."

Cummins tracks and measures diversity initiatives dealing with representation; recruiting, hiring and retention; training; and procurement; just as it measures financial performance. Cummins also has Local Diversity Councils (LDC) throughout the organization. These global Councils serve as ambassadors of diversity for the company. They are involved in training, recruiting, and retention issues pertinent to diversity.

"While we have made significant progress in the area of diversity, we recognize that there is still work to be done," said Solso. "This year we are addressing employee retention, strengthening support of Local Diversity Councils, identifying the "disadvantaged' groups in our international organizations and improving work-life initiatives."

Because an inclusive environment is valued by Cummins, all employees must attend Spectrum Diversity Training, designed exclusively for the organization. The company also offers training and enforces a Treatment of Others, Harassment and Code of Conduct Policy.

Cummins, headquartered in Columbus, Ind., is the world's largest producer of diesel engines above 200 horsepower. The company provides products and services for customers in markets worldwide for engines, power generation and filtration. Cummins reported record sales of $6.6 billion in 1999.
