Tracks: Irwindale Speedway Board gives green light for drag strip project
6 July 2000
Irwindale, Calif. - - In a meeting on Saturday, July 1, the board of directors of Irwindale Speedway gave their approval to continue with plans for a drag strip facility to be built on the race track grounds. A 1/8-Mile strip for street legal cars and junior dragsters sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is envisioned along the southernmost property line of the Speedway property. Races would most likely be staged on one evening during the week and on Sundays. Speedway Vice President, COO, Bob DeFazio was pleased with the "green light" that he got from the board. "This is just one more part of making Irwindale Speedway a full-time motorsports destination. This, along with race car testing and tuning, driving schools, movie and commercial shoots, car shows, car club events, new car introductions, and our great interest in Karting adds up to keep Irwindale a very busy place five, six, and sometimes seven days a week. That's what we built this facility for in the first place." More information on the new drag racing facility at Irwindale will be available soon. An official groundbreaking date has not been set, but is expected to be announced in the next few weeks.
