Toyota Reports Best-Ever June
3 July 2000
Sets Second-Quarter and First-Half Sales RecordsTORRANCE, Calif. - Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., followed up the best sales month in its history by reporting best-ever June sales of 132,363, an increase of 7.8 percent over last June. The record-setting month culminated with best-ever second-quarter sales of 416,918. With calendar-year-to-date sales of 813,292, up 14.2 percent, Toyota recorded its best-ever first half in 43 years of business in the U.S. "It's clear that the record pace of the first half will give way to slower growth over the balance of the year," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president. "Although consumers are weighing purchases more carefully, the drawing power of the industry's best crop of new products in years remains a significant factor." Both TMS divisions increased sales over the same period last year. The Toyota Division recorded best-ever June sales of 116,156, an increase of 7.8 percent. Toyota Division CYTD sales stand at 719,614, an increase of 15.7 percent. The Lexus Division also reported best-ever June sales with 16,207, also an increase of 7.8 percent. Lexus Division CYTD sales total 93,678 units sold, up 3.6 percent over last year. Toyota passenger car sales recorded June sales of 72,135, an increase of 17.2 percent. The Avalon full-size sedan led the sales charge with best-ever June sales of 8,904, an increase of 100.4 percent. Celica also enjoyed solid sales of 4,727, up 710.8 percent. The ECHO entry-level sedan and limited production MR2 Spyder roadster continued to post strong sales with 4,050 and 831, respectively. The Toyota Sienna passenger van posted its best-ever June with sales of 9,817, an increase of 21.1 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup continued its sales momentum with best-ever June sales of 8,295, up 3.5 percent. The Lexus June sales record was led by the RX 300 sport utility vehicle with best-ever June sales of 6,872, an increase of 17.7 percent. The launch of the all-new IS 300 compact sport sedan started strong with 1,853 sales in only a seven-day sales period. Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 63.3 percent of total June sales.
