Toyota Announces Management Changes in Key Business Units

TORRANCE, Calif. - Toyota Motor Sales USA today announced management changes within a number of its business units, including Lexus Division, the University of Toyota and Central Atlantic Toyota Distributors, Inc., effective July 1, 2000. Bryan Bergsteinsson, formerly group vice president and general manager, Lexus Division, is appointed group vice president, University of Toyota. During Bergsteinsson's tenure as head of Lexus, the division has had record-setting years and attained the highest sales and profit levels ever experienced by Lexus. Lexus again placed first in the National Automobile Dealers' Association rankings for dealer satisfaction with an auto manufacturer. Bergsteinsson's new role with Toyota's dealer and associate education organization will extend the positive impact of Lexus Division's success to the entire TMS organization. Richard L. Chitty, the present head of the University, has accepted an officer-level position within Toyota Motor Corporation's International Operations. He will play a major role in Toyota's global organization and will assume an overseas assignment. This move is an example of how TMS, USA will play a growing role in TMC's globalization efforts. Additional details will be announced at a future date. Prior to serving as vice president of the University of Toyota, Chitty was vice president of the TMS New Era Business Project and held a wide variety of positions with the Lexus Division, including vice president of parts, service customer satisfaction and training for the luxury division. Dennis E. Clements will succeed Bergsteinsson as group vice president and general manager, Lexus Division. Previously president and general manager of Central Atlantic Toyota Distributors, Inc. since 1991, Clements was the chief operating officer of Toyota's wholly owned distributorship for Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia and West Virginia. He has 17 years' experience with Toyota including positions as general manager of the Denver and New York sales regions, national sales manager and corporate maritime and logistics operation manager. Donald V. Esmond, previously group vice president, Toyota Division, was promoted to senior vice president in June. Esmond will assume additional responsibilities for Toyota Logistics Services, a TMS subsidiary that provides vehicle transportation from manufacturing plants and ports of entry to Toyota dealerships. John Turmell, senior vice president, customer services group, will take on additional duties as senior vice president, affiliated companies. He will assume responsibilities for Airflite, Toyota's FBO aviation development unit, and Toyota MarineSports, maker of Toyota Epic ski and wakeboard boats.
