ISC Secures IRL Event At Homestead Miami Speedway for 2001
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--June 19, 2000--International Speedway Corporation ("ISC") , announced today the Indy Racing League ("IRL") will bring its Northern Light Series to Homestead Miami Speedway on April 8, 2001.In addition, the sanctioning body plans to bring the series to Richmond International Raceway on June 30, 2001, pending track test results which are scheduled for June 27, 2000.
According to the IRL schedule released on Sunday, ISC is expecting to host five Indy Racing Northern Light Series events in 2001. In addition to Miami and Richmond, ISC is scheduled to host races at Phoenix International Raceway (March 18, 2001), Kansas Speedway (July 8, 2001) and Chicagoland Speedway (Sept. 2, 2001). Chicagoland Speedway, owned by Raceway Associates, LLC, is a joint venture between ISC, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation and the former owners of the Route 66 Raceway.
Separately, Championship Auto Racing Teams ("CART") announced its CART FedEx Championship Series would not return to Homestead Miami Speedway in 2001. At the present time, ISC is unable to quantify the combined impact of the sanctioning body change at Miami as well as the potential addition of an IRL event in Richmond on its 2001 earnings.
"We were very surprised that CART decided to drop Miami next year particularly after the success of this year's event," said Jim France, President and Chief Operating Officer of International Speedway Corporation. "It is important for us to continue to provide championship-quality, Indy car racing for south Florida fans. The inclusion of the Miami IRL race gives us events in five premier markets in the growing IRL championship series beginning in 2001."
