CASCAR Castrol Super Series East - Mosport results

18 June 2000

Exide Batteries 200
Thomson tops at Mosport

OSHAWA, ON - Reigning CASCAR Castrol Super Series East champion Don
Thomson Jr. put on a dominant performance on Saturday night at Mosport
Int'l Speedway, leading 127 of the 200 lap Exide Batteries 200 to take his
first checkered flag of the season.
The Home Hardware Chevrolet driver lined up on the outside front row in
the 38-car starting field and appeared in control at all times during the
event, held in front of over 8,000 fans on the Mosport half-mile oval.
Thomson, who races out of Ayr, ON, pitted while leading - under caution on
lap 121 - and methodically worked his way forward over the next 48 laps
before taking the lead for the third and final time.
Polesitter Peter Gibbons was the only other competitor capable of keeping
up with Thomson's furious pace and came across the line, in second, just
over a second back of Thomson after 200 laps. Neil Fair's Skoal Inc. Chevy
finished third - another second and a half behind Gibbons - for an
'all-Chevrolet' podium.

Race Notes: Heat race victories during qualifying for the Exide Batteries
200 went to Scott Steckly, John Fitzpatrick and Al Long. Al Turner, who won
the first two races of the Super Series East season, took the 'Fast
Qualifiers' heat. Unfortunately for the Barrie, ON racer, he was involved
in the race's major incident on lap 34 and saw his evening finish early.
Peter Gibbons' pole-winning lap of 22.092 seconds was a track record for
the CASCAR Late Models at Mosport. In all, a total of 25 competitors were
under the old mark of 22.807 seconds.

Next event: Next weekend, the CASCAR Castrol Super Series East heads to the
Maritimes for its annual visit to New Brunswick Int'l Speedway, in
Fredericton, NB, on June 24-25. The CARQUEST 200 - for the past few seasons
the final race on the Eastern schedule (held in September) - has been moved
forward a few months in 2000. In addition to the regular competitors from
Ontario and Quebec, Nova Scotia Late Model star Scott Fraser will again
participate in CASCAR's lone East Coast event of the season.
