CASCAR Castrol Super Series - Weekend Preview

16 June 2000

LONDON, ON - The CASCAR Castrol Super Series will be busy on both its
Eastern and Western fronts this weekend, with a pair of Saturday night
feature events. The Super Series East will hold its fourth race of the 2000
season, at the half-mile, Mosport Int'l Speedway oval. Western competitors
will be in action at the Hythe Motor Speedway, in Hythe, AB, for their
third outing of the young racing campaign.
In the East, the 'Exide Batteries 200' will see all eyes squarely focussed
on Don Thomson Jr. The reigning Super Series East champion won the Mosport
oval event in '99, in his Home Hardware Chevrolet, and is coming into the
race atop the Eastern point standings. He holds a slim, four-point lead
over Ford Fast Lane driver Kerry Micks, who won last Saturday night in
Montreal, QC, and enjoys a 19-point gap over Al Turner, who won the first
two races in his new, Blue Streak Intrepid.
The June 17 evening race at Mosport will also feature a special appearance
by WWF personality 'Ivory'. She will be signing autographs for one hour,
commencing at 5:45 p.m. The evening's racing program will also feature the
Cullwick Auto Service Challenger Division, which appears every Saturday
night at the Mosport oval. Spectator gates open at 1:00 p.m., with time
trials at 3:00 and heat races at 3:45. The Exide Batteries 200 is scheduled
to take the green flag at 7:30 p.m.
Turning to the West, the Bumper to Bumper 150 at Alberta's Hythe Motor
Speedway will see former Western champion Dan Shirley enter the June 17
race with a slight lead on the racing Harr family. Father Carl won last
Saturday evening at Medicine Hat (AB) Speedway and sits just 22 markers
behind fellow Chevy driver Dan Shirley in the championship chase. Daryl
Harr is another dozen points back of his father, in just his third Super
Series West season.
The 3/8-mile oval is located near Grand Prairie, AB and will see the
introduction of a second 'regular' Apollo Motorsports team car. In two
seasons, Trevor Seibert of Williams Lake, BC has twice taken the reigns of
Kevin Dowler's 'second' Ford Taurus... and has twice finished on the
podium. Most recently, Seibert finished second at Medicine Hat, last
Saturday night. Seibert's car will bear primary sponsorship from EMCO Limited.
Time trials for the Bumper to Bumper 150 will start at 4:00 p.m. Heat
races for the CASCAR Castrol Super Series West's third feature race of the
season are slated to get underway at 5:00, with the 150 lap feature to
follow soon after.
