This weekend the Goodyear Eagle racing tires will sporting a new D-code in the 6000 series, but there's no cause for confusion. Simple enough, the engineers are running out of 5000-series numbers that the tires have carried for several years. GOODYEAR QUOTE: Tony Freund, lead engineer, stock car tire development: "This weekend marks the introduction of the new-generation tire at Pocono. Bill Elliott, Bobby Hamilton and Jeremy Mayfield tested the tire at Pocono in April of 2000, and it performed extremely well. The tire performance improvements were dramatic on this high-speed flat track, which is very similar to Homestead and Indianapolis, and we can expect an improved ride, cornering and wear over the 1999 race tire. The new tires at Pocono are very similar to the new-generation tires that were raced at the inaugural Homestead WC race weekend in 1999. "Since the Pocono and Indianapolis tracks have a lot in common, the tire test at the Brickyard in early June provided a lot of useful information for both tracks. We'll supply the same tire set-up at Indianapolis as we race at Pocono; therefore, much of what the teams learn about the new tires here at Pocono this weekend will apply to their strategy for the 2000 Brickyard 400 in August."
